Oct 2015 - Jan 2016
We have been learning all about winter. To start our topic we went for a walk around the school environment to detect signs of winter and changes all around us. This led on to the children understanding the need to care for the birds when their food is scarce. They went on to make special bird biscuits and hung them on our playground. They explored different shaped cutters to see if the birds had a preference! Next, the children looked at how we can keep ourselves healthy in the wintertime by eating hot healthy food and wrapping ourselves up in warm clothes. Following on from the children interests in snow and ice we experimented with how ice freezes and melts, looking at changes. The children had great fun playing with the ice both inside and out!
In Read, Write Inc. sessions, the children have been put into smaller groups according to their needs and next steps. We have also introduced think and talk books where the children have opportunities to write from their own experiences and independently. In maths, we have been looking at; number and space, shape and measures using the Busy Ants scheme of work. The children now have more opportunities to work with an adult across the week both inside and outside. The children and staff both enjoyed our Stay and Play session when some of the parents came in to work with their children. We have enjoyed putting on a Nativity with nursery where parents were invited to watch.
Next half term our topic will be called Buildings and Homes.
