Year 6

Oct 2015 - Jan 2016

This term Y6 have been very busy! We began the term ‘hitting the ground running’; with our learning in English and History taking us back to life in the 1930s. Our biggest success within this cross-curricular topic has to be the children’s enjoyment of the text ‘Goodnight Mr Tom’, which we had as our class readers – even going with us to Chasewater for our residential! We have never had such a response from parents about a book, with so many at parents’ evening commenting on how engrossed their children were. This tied in with our Literacy and Language unit ‘Brashem’s Tortoise’.

Just four weeks into the new term, we ventured out to Chasewater for our outdoor learning week. It provided us with a fantastic opportunity to get to really know our new pupils, and really promoted self-development and team building for all who went. Both children and staff had a fantastic learning experience and were thankfully graced with good weather too!

Our Maths learning through the Busy Ant scheme continues to really motivate the children, and as part of our drive to make accelerated progress, our maths lessons have been extended by 15 minutes a day – something which the children were genuinely very happy about!

In late December, we turned a local serious incident into an excellent learning opportunity: the local disused Westway pub was burnt to the ground under suspicious circumstances and we followed this up with a session on writing a newspaper article provided by a local journalist (one of our governors) and also invited in the lead detective investigating the incident. He brought with him a forensic support worker and the two of them held a Q&A session with the children about the incident itself and the process of investigation. This will result in some very interesting written work.

Year 6 continue to help out at lunch times with house duties, and this is now relatively stress free and smooth-running thanks to Mrs Dodd, and we have also appointed both Sports leaders and Head and Deputy Head boys and girls. All in all a very productive term for Year 6!
